Make Chinese Floating Lanterns

Use battery-operated tea lights to cut down on the fire hazard.

In Asian countries, floating lanterns are used to remember dead souls, and each lantern and candle signifies one soul. The lanterns are attached to wooden bases and left to float down the river, creating an atmospheric, haunting scene. You can create your own lanterns and use a battery-operated votive candle to float lanterns on a pool or pond in your backyard. Children will especially enjoy this project.

Instructions

1. Cut designs out of the paper in a way similar to cutting out paper snowflakes. Cut out triangles, squiggle lines, squares or any other shapes. The shapes will allow more light to filter through the paper.

2. Roll the paper into a cylinder and secure the long edges using glue, tape or staples.

3. Place a candle on top of a coaster and turn it on.

4. Place tape or glue on the bottom of the lantern cylinder and secure it to the coaster.

5. Float the lantern on a pool or pond.
