Today's faucets include adjustable knobs that control the final output temperature of your water. This feature is designed to prevent scalding and is often referred to as a scald guard. For homes with powerful water heaters that provide very hot water, this function is very useful. To adjust a one-handle kitchen faucet that is too hot, set it colder and lower the total overall temperature of your faucet water.
Instructions
1. Locate the small round screw hole on the faucet handle. It is usually located under the lever on single-handle faucets. Loosen the screw with an Allen wrench. Remove the cap on the end of the handle, if your faucet has a scald guard control feature inside the handle; Delta scald guard faucets are designed with a cap.
2. Pull the handle off the faucet by sliding it away from the base of the faucet. The handle is attached to the cartridge stem and as you pull it will slide free of this stem, leaving just a cartridge and retaining nut beneath it. Leave the retaining nut in for now. If you removed just the handle cap in the above step, leave the handle in place. The adjustment control dial is on top of the handle.
3. Turn the dial on the adjustment control under the handle towards the side indicating colder water. This is usually clockwise but check your faucet documentation to be sure. Replace the handle and tighten the set screw again.
4. Test the water by turning the faucet all the way to the hottest setting and leave it there for one minute. Insert a thermometer into the water stream and take the reading. Remove the handle and adjust the temperature control to your liking.
Tips Warnings
At 105 degrees Fahrenheit, water is hot enough to shower in but generally not hot enough to scald.
