Venetian blinds are a great addition to the home. They provide privacy by hiding the room from outside viewing and they are great for blocking out light. Venetian blinds are usually made from wood or metal, and consist of long, horizontal slats with strings to pull them up or down. Cleaning venetian blinds should be done regularly, along with other housecleaning. Home remedies are a cost-effective and relatively easy way to clean your venetian blinds.
Dishwashing Soap
An easy and gentle way to clean venetian blinds is with dishwashing soap. First, remove the venetian blinds from the window. Then, fill a bathtub with about five inches of warm water mixed with a few squirts of dishwashing soap. Place the venetian blinds in the water and scrub down the blinds.
Laundry Detergent
Laundry detergent also can be used to clean venetian blinds, similar to dishwashing soap. Again, remove the blinds from the window and place them in a bathtub with five inches of warm water to which approximately one-half of a cap of laundry detergent has been added. Liquid detergent works much better than powder detergent. Use a cloth or sponge to scrub the venetian blinds.
Liquid Soap
Liquid soap and a soft cloth is an easy way to clean venetian blinds without having to take them down from the window. Fill a spray bottle most of the way full with warm water. Add a few pumps of liquid hand soap and shake. Spray the blinds with the mixture and use the soft cloth to wipe down each of the blinds.
