Repair a Moen Shower Faucet Single-Handle Unit
Moen single-handle shower faucets are long lasting and simple to repair. The cartridge may become difficult to pull up and push down because of hard-water mineral deposits or loss of lubrication. To repair your Moen single-handle shower faucet, you will take it apart to expose the cartridge, replace the cartridge, and reassemble the faucet.
Instructions
Repairing a Moen Single-Handle Shower Faucet
1. Pry off the decorative cap on the handle to expose the handle retaining screw. Loosen this screw and lift off the handle. If the screw is stripped out and cannot be removed, drill out the screw or break off the handle and buy a replacement.
2. Remove the screws in the escutcheon plate (the round metal plate that rests behind the handle) and pull off the plate.
3. You will see a stainless cartridge collar with an indent that points up. Pull this collar by hand.
4. Find the U-clip that holds the cartridge in place. With needle-nose pliers, pull the U-clip straight up and out.
5. Using pliers, pull out the cartridge. If the cartridge sticks, pull harder and it will come out.
6. Using a paper towel or rag, clean out the sediment in the inside of the cartridge housing. Lubricate the replacement cartridge with plumber's grease, or the provided lubricant. Replace the cartridge and put the faucet back together, making sure to install the cartridge collar with the indent pointing up, towards the shower head.
Tips Warnings
There are several cartridge designs. To ensure that you get the right replacement cartridge, take the old cartridge to the hardware store.
Turn off the water supply before repairing your Moen shower faucet single-handle unit.
