Airbrushing is an art that involves using an air gun to apply paint to a surface. Airbrush art is one of the easiest for a beginner to try. Airbrushing can be done on any surface, using many different paints, and is ideal for painting a holiday scene on glass. If you have a slight artistic flair and a desire to airbrush, you can learn to airbrush a holiday scene on glass with only a little practice and some imagination.
Instructions
1. Clean and dry the glass surface you want to paint on with any standard glass cleaner. Be sure the glass you want to paint on is completely dry before you begin airbrushing.
2. Choose a simple holiday scene to start. Santa Claus with his reindeer on a sled surrounded by a snowy back drop might be an easy choice. Stencil your design on glass first. It's not necessary to stencil an outline of your holiday scene first; but if you don't have the ability to draw freehand, using a stencil allows you to apply an image ready for airbrushing. Choose an outline color that matches the color of the object you want to airbrush and use a 0.4mm needle to apply the outline.
3. Airbrush the snow-covered ground using a 0.6mm nozzle. Apply the snow in long, even strokes going from left to right. Place sporadic snowflakes all around Santa and the sleigh by using quick bursts of paint to form little snowflakes. Keep the paint application light to avoid running and puddling on your glass surface.
4. Change the nozzle on your airbrush to 0.4mm to airbrush Santa and the sleigh. Apply the red in Santa's costume, then switch to black paint and brush in a few light black lines to help bring out texture in the suit.
5. Apply all the basic colors to your holiday scene then use secondary colors to give the holiday scene dimension. For Santa's beard, add a little gray to the white to take away some of the starkness of the white paint. Add small black lines to the brown reindeer to give the fur a more realistic appearance. Airbrushing looks flat if you use one color, so adding the secondary colors is essential to texture and depth.
Tips Warnings
Always apply your airbrush paint in even strokes and check your work often. For larger works, you may want to step back and view them periodically.
