The Ford Escape is an SUV with all the features, but better fuel economy than most other automobiles in its class. According to Edmunds, it is the first hybrid SUV to hit the U.S. market, offering families everything they need in an SUV, while still giving them the opportunity to go green. When the shocks go bad, they make an otherwise smooth ride rougher than it should be. Changing the shocks is not difficult, and each wheel will take you about 45 minutes to complete.
Instructions
1. Open the hood, and disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the nut on the terminal. Place the wheel chocks in front of the front wheels of the Escape. Inside the Escape, remove the rear quarter panel using a screwdriver to gain access to the top shock nut. Remove the nut using a socket and ratchet.
2. Lift the Ford up with the automobile jack on the side that you are starting with. Lift it just enough to relax the suspension. Remove the lower nut from the shock absorber using a socket and ratchet. Pull the shock out from under the Escape. Put the new shock in place, and install the bottom nut using a socket and ratchet.
3. Lower the Escape to the ground. Move to the inside of the Escape, and install the top nut with a socket and ratchet. Replace the quarter panel, and secure it with a screwdriver. Repeat the procedure for the other side of the Escape.
4. Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the nut with a wrench.
Tips Warnings
The battery must be disconnected to prevent accidental deployment of the airbags.
