Wooden Shoe Crafts For Kids

Once an essential Dutch footwear, today's wooden shoes are used primarily for decoration and crafting.

Wooden shoe crafts for kids allow the creation of unique, unusual craft projects. Originating in the Netherlands, the wooden shoe, or clog, was once a wardrobe staple for Dutch people. Today, wooden shoes are used primarily for decoration. Inexpensive, commercially-produced wooden shoes made for the crafting market are now readily available through specialty catalogs and websites, as well as select arts and crafts stores.

Wooden Shoe Planter

Decorate a wooden shoe with crafting paints and seal inside and out with an indoor-outdoor, water-resistant, polyurethane finish. Fill the shoe with potting soil and add bedding plants or flower seeds and watch them bloom.

Wooden Shoe Desk Caddy

Decorate a wooden shoe with decoupage or craft paints and glue a felt pad to the bottom portion of the shoe. The shoe can now sit on a desk without scratching the surface and serve as a unique pen and pencil holder.

Holiday-Themed Wooden Shoes

Dutch children used to look for candy in their wooden shoes during the holidays. You can revive this tradition by decorating wooden shoes for various holidays: Red and green-striped shoes filled with colorful candy canes for Christmas; pink, painted wooden shoes sprinkled with sparkling glitter, finished with stenciled hearts and filled with candy kisses make a lovely Valentine's Day treat; Black and orange paint-splattered wooden shoes adorned with festive silver ribbons and filled with gummy bats make a unique Halloween decoration.
