Need to replace intermatic e1020 timer switch whats it do good replacement

Need to replace Intermatic e1020 timer switch. What's it do? Good replacement?

We moved into our house five years ago and noticed an Intermatic e1020 on the laundry room wall. Over the years it has gotten very noisy and it's disturbing when you're in the bathroom that shares a wall. To the best of my knowledge, all it does it turn on a ventilation fan when a button is pushed, and shut it off whenever one of the triggers comes around. We never use it, and we're not sure whether it has some sort of automatic function that we're not aware of, or if it's just intended to let you ventilate the laundry room for a short time. I had planned to replace it with a simple clockspring-style timer switch, but I can't figure out the wiring and I want to make sure the switch still does what it's supposed to. The Intermatic switch has black white and red wires. The clockspring switch is set up for only black and white. I need to know: 1) Why three wires? 2) Is there a digital unit that will do whatever the e1020 is supposed to be doing, but without all the racket? 3) If there's no digital unit, how would I wire the clockspring unit? Thanks It's a SPST time switch and can be replaced with a single pole light switch. You should have power in, power out and neutrals. This timer probably needs a neutral connection to operate the timer motor. With a springwound timer the neutrals would be tied together like a normal single pole light switch. 24-Hour Mechanical Time Switches These heavy duty timers can be used to turn on lights, fans, pumps and other heavy duty loads for energy savings, security and convenience. The timer is designed to mount to any standard junction box for replacing a wall switch. Models are available in single ON / OFF or multiple ON / OFF type. Both models have an easy to use manual override. 24-Hour Mechanical Time Switches | Intermatic, Inc.
