Remove paint from a wood deck

Remove Paint from a wood Deck

Experts, I have a wood deck, where my family had made the mistake painting over 10 years ago. The paint is now cracking and peeling and just looks very ugly. I need to know a way that I can remove the paint and then proceed properly to staining the deck. This deck is pretty big so quickest and easiest option is best, I saw this video on youtube not sure what you guys think of it. Thanks in advance... YouTube - Stripping Paint From the Deck the Easy Way Using a Pressure Washer Welcome to the forums! It's hard to tell for sure but it looks like they might be removing a latex stain/paint that was applied over an oil base stain. Generally it isn't a good idea to rely on a PWer to remove the paint. It will remove it but usually damaging the wood in the process I'd apply paint stripper to the deck, let it work and then PW it off, scraping followed by a water hose would also work. Once the majority of the paint is removed, a little scraping and sanding would likely be needed to finish. I'd recommend using a solid stain because it will hide any paint that's left in the grain. If you intend to use a translucent or semi-transparent stain - plan on doing a lot more sanding Long ago I made the mistake of using a pressure washer to remove the paint from a deck. I seriously damaged the wood with the soft part of the grain being blasted away over 1/8 deep while the paint remained stuck to the hard part of the grain right next to it. You could not safely walk on the deck in bare feet because of the splinters. The pressure washer was able to remove about 90% of the paint but not all of it. Because of the damage to the wood and to remove the rest of the paint I had to go back over everything with a sander. To do over I would take a look at what chemical strippers are available or if there is a professional company that can do the stripping. I'd suggest using Peel Away II, Or A Soy or citrus stripper. Far safer to use. Soysolvents: Paint Removal
