Troubleshoot A Husqvarna 257 Chain Saw

Troubleshoot your chainsaw to determine the problem.

If you own a Husqvarna 257 chainsaw, there will come a time when the saw just refuses to start, cuts poorly or makes cutting extremely difficult. Fortunately there are many common solutions and easy fixes to these regular operating problems. The Husqvarna 257, like all small engines, requires three basic components to function: air, spark and fuel. If any of these three operating systems are malfunctioning, you will likely notice some problems when trying to cut. You can use some simple tests to help isolate the problem on your Husqvarna chainsaw.

Instructions

Air Compression Test

1. Use the screwdriver to remove the cylinder cover on top of the saw's body. Use your hand to unscrew the air filter. Put it back on the saw.

2. Use a little saw gas and toothbrush to clean the air filter and the cylinder cover. Wipe them clean with the rag. Replace any filter that's too dirty to clean.

3. Use the Allen wrench to remove the muffler's cover. Remove the spark arrestor screen from inside the muffler, and clean this the same way as the air filter. Put back on the saw.

4. Use the screwdriver to remove the starter cover, located on the pull cord side of the body. Pull off the cover. Clean the cover, fan and inside the starter area with the gas, toothbrush and rag. Inspect the starter cord for any damage. Replace if necessary, and put back on the saw.

5. Try starting the saw to see if it has air compression. If there's air compression, the engine will make a whirring or chugging noise.

Spark Test

6. Pull off the spark plug boot from the spark plug. Remove the spark plug with the spark plug wrench. Use the gas, toothbrush and rag to clean off all the debris and caked-on gunk from the spark plug. Make sure the gap is set to 0.5 millimeters.

7. Put the spark plug back into the rubber boot. Place the boot and spark plug near a metal spot on the engine block. Don't reattach it to the engine.

8. Pull on the starter cord slowly and look for a spark in between the spark plug and the metal on the engine. If there's no spark, replace the spark plug and try the test again.

9. Check the plug, wires and starter coil for any damage if the new spark plug doesn't solve the problem. Replace any cracked or damaged parts.

Fuel Test

10. Drain the saw of gas and bar oil. Use the needle nose pliers to pull out the fuel filter and fuel line. Replace both of these because they are very cheap and solve many problems.

11. Clean inside the gas tank with the toothbrush, rag and a little carburetor cleaner. Do the same with the bar oil tank. Replace the oil filter if it can't be cleaned. Fill the saw with fresh gas and oil.

12. Remove the air filter again to expose the carburetor. Depress the throttle to open the carburetor (little swinging flap that opens when throttled), and spray starter fluid into the carburetor. Try starting the saw.

13. Remove, disassemble and clean the entire carburetor if the saw still won't start. Place all of the carburetor's parts in a bath of carburetor cleaner, and let it soak for one to two days. Scrape everything clean with a metal brush. Replace any worn or damaged parts.

Tips Warnings

A majority of Husqvarna 257 problems are in connection with a dirty or damaged carburetor.

Proper storage and cleaning of the carburetor is necessary to keep old gas from drying up in the carburetor.

Take your Husqvarna 257 chainsaw to a licensed Husqvarna mechanic if you are unsure about perform any of these repairs.
