Prevent Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a condition where the cornea is unevenly curved. It caused blurry and distorted vision. Astigmatism is very common and new eye care products have been popping up in the marketplace to help people with the condition. No one really knows what causes astigmatism. Some are born with it, while others develop it later in life. It can be hereditary. Sometimes people develop the condition after cataract or cornea surgery.Since there isn't a known cause for astigmatism, there isn't a way to prevent it. This article gives ways of treating and living with astigmatism.

Instructions

1. Visit the eye doctor regularly. A routine eye exam can determine if you have astigmatism. Special instruments may be used to determine eye diseases. Some symptoms that are associated with astigmatism are nearsightedness, farsightedness, blurry and uneven vision.

2. Get treatment. If slight astigmatism is detected, nothing is needed for treatment, not even glasses. For more greater degrees of astigmatism, glasses or contact lenses may be prescribed by your doctor.

3. Sign up for surgery. There are three procedures that can be done to reshape the cornea; astigmatic keratotomy (AK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). AK is when the surgeon flattens the cornea by cutting small slits in it. PRK is when the surgeon removes the thin layers of the cornea with a laser. LASIK is where the surgeon reshapes the cornea with a laser and a precise tool. There are many risks when having one of these surgical procedures. One is the scarring, which can cause glare. Nearsightedness or farsightedness can be worse. The astigmatism can get worse or the eye can become infected. So surgery should never be your first choice when diagnosed with astigmatism. However, there have been many people who have had great success with surgery. LASIK is the procedures that has been subject of talk lately.
