Oldfashioned Remedies For Snoring

Use these simple tricks to find a restful nights sleep.

If you sleep with a partner who snores, then you know how frustrating it can be to stay asleep as his midnight fog horn sounds. With plenty of home-remedy ideas, it is easy to find a simple solution that will work for you and your partner. Whether you change your diet, perform special exercises or alter your sleep position, a silent night is possible.

Diet

People with diets high in fat and salt are more prone to snoring. Cutting back on unhealthy foods will not only help your waistline, but your sleeping habits as well. Avoid filling your belly with high-fat midnight munchies so your body has time to process and digest food before you fall asleep. Food is fuel, and your body does not need fuel as it sleeps.

In addition, you may notice after a night of drinking, that you or your partner's snoring is worse. Sleeping while intoxicated makes for a restless night's sleep, leading to louder snoring. If you are a chronic snorer, avoid drinking in excess.

Drink tea with honey before you start counting sheep. The drink not only relax your mind, but will also sooth and lubricate your throat and nasal passages, loosening them for a restful, snore-free night.

Exercises

Jaw tension is a leading cause of snoring. Learning a couple simple exercises to loosen your jaw will help your body and mind relax, and hopefully end your snoring. Rub your jaw muscles in a circular motion from front to back as you imagine it opening up. Remember to breathe deeply as you do this, in order to fully release the muscle tension.

Create friction and heat between your hands by rubbing them together. Then place your warmed hands on your jaw, allowing the heat to relax the muscles. Breathe deeply as you feel your jaw release tension.

Hitting the gym on a regular basis is another great way to stop snoring. Losing body weight will help to reduce the amount of pressure placed on your lungs as you sleep, allowing them to take in air without the detriment of snoring. Plus, the gym is a great place to work out tension that may be binding up your body and causing you to snore through the night.

Sleep Position

If you are a snorer, you should not sleep on your back. The reason is that your air passageways are more stressed as the weight of your body presses down on them. If you are a chronic snorer, try sleeping on your side. It may be hard to adjust at first, but placing a pillow between your legs can help you find a comfortable position.

If you are awakened by a snoring partner, try moving him from the position he is asleep in to stop him from snoring. Rubbing his upper lip with your finger may disturb him enough to move on his own without waking him up.
