Troubles with Olsen Oil Burner
Good day folks, As soon as it hits -30 outside, things always seem to go wrong... We've been having some trouble with our oil furnace lately (a mid-late 70's Olsen burner). It will ignite, burn until it shuts down to cool off, then when the pump kicks in again, it will not ignite the second time. I've cleaned everything up inside the burner and put in a new nozzle, but the problem persists. At the start of the season, we had quite a bit of water coming through the lines, but I've managed to bleed it off, so I don't think it's really part of the problem. Any ideas as to what may be causing this? Cheers! Olsen doesn't make burners, just furnaces. I suspect there is a Beckett burner. Exactly what in the burner have you cleaned/replaced? Are the electrodes set properly? How is the ignition transformer? What kind of primary control (model)? Cheers! Did you identify where the water was coming from? The back of the burner has a large Olsen sticker on it, I just checked it out again and couldn't find anything else identifying it's make. The transformer is an Allanson. I've had the nozzle replaced (.85 80*A) and I've cleaned off the electrodes and reset them to their proper place. (Above - 5/8; Horizontal - 1/8; Forward 1/8). If it would help more, I can get a picture and post it (just have to find the camera) @SeattlePioneer - my heating guy had a look earlier this year and thought that the moisture was likely from condensation in the tank, we had a good look all over the tank and couldn't find anything else 5/8 is way too far above the nozzle. Get them down to about 7/16 above the nozzle center and 1/16 ahead of the nozzle face. Photos would be much appreciated. Tried resetting the electrodes to the measurements given and cleaned up the electrodes, it fired up very nicely (better than it has been), but the problem persists - it wouldn't fire up the second time. I am uploading some pictures to photobucket that I will put in the next post. Pictures of the furnace, hopefully they will shed a little light on the problem I certainly don't like the looks of the nozzle assembly. I would not be surprised if either the furnace were plugged or cracked. The next time you get it running, rap the primary control (box with the red light) with a screwdriver handle. Rap firmly but don't wail on it. If the control either locks out or drops out then comes right back on, the control is bad. The nozzle assembly is really crudded up. I'll give the box a tap tomorrow when I go back to it. Frustration is setting in with this project and I know better than to work at anything like this without a clear mind I'll keep you posted! Thanks for all your help thusfar! Cheers! Some other things that I see are it appears that the electrodes are pretty much blunt-ended and they should be pointed. Also, when the motor was replaced whoever did it couldn't be bothered to use the correct conduit back to the connection box and the conduit bringing power to the connection box is not properly fastened. These loose wires are an accident waiting to happen.
