Longterm Use Of Lunesta

Lunesta (eszopiclone) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of insomnia. It can be used for short- and long-term relief of insomnia.

Rebound Insomnia

Rebound insomnia is a condition that may occur after use of Lunesta, especially over a long period of time. Insomnia may end up being worse after cessation of Lunesta than prior to treatment. This occurs due to the body having to physiologically adjust to sleeping without the presence of a sleep aid, and also because many individuals have become conditioned to fall asleep after taking the medication.

Depression

Long-term use of Lunesta may result in the worsening of depressive symptoms. This is likely due to the CNS (central nervous system) depressant effects of Lunesta. While the exact causes for this are not clear, one potential reason is that Lunesta acts as a CNS depressant. Caution is advised when taking Lunesta if a history of depression exists.

Dependence

The risk of developing dependence on Lunesta increases during longer periods of use. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported, including anxiety, upset stomach and insomnia.

Tolerance

Tolerance may result from taking Lunesta over a long period of time. Increased dosages of Lunesta may be required to achieve similar effects.

Other Medications

If Lunesta loses its effectiveness, other medications may be considered, including antidepressants and other sleep aids.
