SLAP lesions are shoulder injuries characterized by a tear of a labrum tear. Labrum tears are usually caused by an injury. A common scenario is falling with an arm outstretched. Other causes can be simple over use. No matter how the tear occurs it results in shoulder pain. SLAP is an acronym for superior labrum from anterior to posterior.

Chiropractic Care

Initial treatment of a slap lesion will include efforts to reduce pain and swelling. This will likely icing the injury and non-prescription pain pills such as aspirin or ibuprofen. A definitive diagnosis of SLAP lesions may require an MRI.

According to Chirocommunity.com chiropractors can treat many forms of shoulder pain. Treatment will be specifically designed by the chiropractor based on the patient's injury, physical condition and their recovery goals.

If the SLAP lesion is the result of overuse, the chiropractor may address the type of motion that caused the injury. This may result in finding ways to eliminate the strain that caused the injury.

The chiropractor may also work with the patient on pain management methods such as massage, heat or ice packs, traction or strengthening exercises. Each case may have a different course of treatment.

Because pain in the shoulder can be caused by several different conditions, consultation and testing by a medical doctor to determine the exact cause of the pain is suggested.
