Anxiety Attack Remedies
Anxiety attacks can be stressful and scary. Fortunately, there are a number of prescription, over-the-counter and home remedies that can help relieve anxiety attacks and bring a sense of peace and calm back into the lives of anxiety sufferers. Remedies include behavioral therapy, medication, exercise, relaxation techniques and hypnosis.
Behavioral Therapy
Behavioral therapy is considered to be one of the most effective remedies for anxiety attacks. Behavioral therapy involves a therapist discussing objects that trigger anxiety, and helping to reverse negative feelings that the patient has towards the object or idea. Exposure therapy is a similar type of therapy in which the professional exposes the patient to the thing that triggers his anxiety attacks, and then talks him through the experience to that his anxiety diminishes. When he is later confronted with the anxiety trigger, his anxiety level is usually not high enough to cause an anxiety attack.
Medication
Numerous medications are available to ease anxiety and minimize anxiety attacks. The strongest anti-anxiety medications, including Valium and Xanax, require a prescription from a doctor. Kava, Valerian root and passionflower are natural over-the-counter medications that relieve anxiety without the need for a prescription.
Exercise
Physical activity helps reduce general anxiety and anxiety attacks by releasing endorphins throughout the body. Regular exercise has also been known to increase self confidence and reduce stress.
Relaxation
One of the most popular relaxation techniques for easing anxiety attacks immediately is deep breathing. People with anxiety attacks have found that if they breathe in deeply through their nose for 10 seconds and then breathe out through their mouth for 10 seconds, their anxiety attack usually subsides.
Hypnosis
The aim of hypnosis is to retrain the person who is suffering anxiety attacks to have a different reaction to stimuli that normally causes anxiety. Hypnosis essentially redesigns the patient's reaction to anxiety-causing stimuli by redefining anxiety-inducing events for the patient.
