Herbal Remedies for Fatigue


Chronic fatigue should be reviewed by a doctor. It may be a symptom of serious disease. However, certain herbs may help. While usually beneficial some of the ones mentioned below have specific precautions. Astralagus should not be used during an acute infection or while taking blood thinners. Ginseng may interact with blood thinners and should not be taken if you are pregnant or nursing. Indigo root should not be taken if liver or kidney disease is present.


Astralagus








Astralagus is a member of the legume family. The herb acts to strengthen an immune system that may be weakened by long-lasting fatigue.


Olive Leaf Extract


Olive leaves contain a potent antioxidant. The extract is reputed to strengthen the immune system. It is recommended for chronic fatigue syndrome by Dr. James R. Privitera, M.D. (See Additional Resources).


Siberian Ginseng


Ginseng is an adaptogen, working as a stimulant to return the body to an optimal condition better able to tolerate stressful conditions. This stress often exacerbates fatigue.


Wild Indigo Root








This plant is an annual growing in North America. Native Indians used it for many disorders. Herbal doctors recommend it in cases of chronic fatigue syndrome.
