Reduce Fat Content In Sandwiches

Sandwiches can pose a conundrum when trying to choose low fat alternatives. To complicate things, low fat and reduced fat cold cuts or cheese can have some serious taste issues. There are many creative ways to reduce the fat in your daily sandwich.

Reduce Fat Content in Sandwiches


1. Go easy on the condiments. A thin layer of anything beats a thick layer, and mustard or horseradish definitely trumps mayonnaise.


2. Invest in a quality white or red wine vinegar and dribble it on lettuce or onion ingredients in a sandwich. Lime juice is used for salad dressing in many tropical countries, so that would make a healthy choice. Use balsamic vinegar in a pinch.


3. Use a thick layer of delicious hummus or a thin layer of pesto in a sandwich rather than seeking out low fat or reduced fat sandwich meats. Experiment with hard-boiled eggs without the mayonnaise. Opt for homemade or organic canned refried beans as a spread.








4. Get in the habit of spreading goat cheese on a sandwich rather than low fat or reduced fat cheeses. There are quality, tasty low fat cheeses out there, though these are usually imported from Holland or other countries in Western Europe.


5. Layer gourmet lettuce, watercress or arugula, thinly sliced red onion and thinly sliced tomato on the sandwich. You can splurge with the vegetables. Try grated carrot, grated or sliced radish or sprouts for a change to experience a true salad on a sandwich. And don't forget, avocado is a "good" fat!


6. Find dark whole grain bread to enfold your ingredients. Of course, if you're concentrating on lowering the fat strictly in the sandwich filling, you can treat yourself to a sourdough roll.
