Gymnema sylvestre is an herb which has been used in Ayurveda practices for centuries. Its primary effectiveness is believed to be in conditions that are related to blood-sugar levels (such as diabetes). Additionally, the herb boasts antiviral, anti-allergic, and lipid-decreasing properties. There are not a lot of side effects and warnings about gymnema sylvestre; however, there's also limited data surrounding its overall usage and effectiveness.








Significance


Gymnema sylvestre is used to decrease levels of the blood sugars, which can be beneficial in some cases and harmful in others.


Effects


If a person's blood sugar is too low, he may undergo symptoms of weakness, shakiness, fatigue, confusion, experience excessive sweating and lose control of his muscles.


Warning








If usage of the herb causes hypoglycemia and it's not properly treated, a person can lose consciousness and it can be fatal.


Upset Stomach


Gymnema sylvestre may also result in gastrointestinal distress including nausea, abdominal cramping and vomiting. The herb should not be ingested on an empty stomach.


Drug Interactions


Gymnema sylvestre can augment the effectiveness of medications that are used by diabetics to lower their blood sugar. Aside from insulin, the herb may affect the drugs Actos, Avandia, Glimepiride, Glyset, Metformin, Prandin and Precose.


Precaution


People who take any other medications (over-the-counter or prescription) or herbal remedies should consult their doctor prior to using gymnema sylvestre. Additionally, those with pre-existing medical conditions or who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to use the herb under medical supervision only.
