Retainers Vs Mouth Guards

Retainers are used to correct minor orthodontic problems or to maintain an orthodontic correction once a person's braces are removed. Mouth guards are used to protect the teeth when you play sports, or are worn by people who grind their teeth at night.

Types

Mouth guards come in three types: ready-to-wear stock mouth protectors, "boil and bite" mouth protectors and custom-fitted mouth protectors. Retainers are custom-fitted to each patient.

Features

Retainers are made of rubber or clear plastic, some with metal wires that cover the outside of the teeth. Mouth guards are plastic coverings that are worn over the teeth, usually the upper teeth.

Function

Retainers keep teeth in their new position once braces are removed. Mouth guards protect against tooth damage from teeth grinding or injury while playing sports.

Benefits

Teeth can begin to shift position over time. Retainers prevent that from happening. Mouth guards protect not only the teeth but the jaw as well.

Considerations

Take along your mouth guards and retainers every time you visit the dentist so they can be checked to make sure they are fitting properly and offering the right amount of protection.
