Angora sweaters made from Angora rabbit fur must be labeled Angora rabbit hair, per U.S. FTC regulations.
Angora is a luxury fiber, obtained from either the hair of the Angora goat or the Angora rabbit and often blended with synthetic fibers or lambswool, that is very soft and fluffy. While high quality lambswool-angora blends can be almost as soft as cashmere, it has a tendency to shed, molt or lint that can be very frustrating. After all, who wants to leave remnants of their sweater all over their furniture, clothing and friends? In addition to shedding itself, Angora sweaters are also prone to collecting lint, due to its fiber structure. Careful maintenance minimizes Angora shedding.
Instructions
1. Freeze it. When immersed in coldness, Angora fibers stopping shedding, molting and collecting lint. Fold your sweater in an appropriately sized plastic zip bag, making sure to zip it thoroughly to avoid absorbing any freezer odors, and leave it in your freezer for three hours. If you have multiple sweaters or articles of clothing to freeze, bag them individually and fold them thoroughly, to allow the cold to permeate them as thoroughly as possible. Your clothes might be chilly when you go to put them on, but you will stop leaving a trail of linty Angora fur behind you.
2. Defuzz your Angora sweater use an electric sweater fabric shaver or a safety razor. Reducing the amount of Angora fur superficially attached to the sweater will both decrease shedding and the amount of lint that is attracted to your sweater.
3. Wash properly. Caring for your Angora sweater will reduce its shedding properties and the amount of lint attracted to it. Always hand wash or dry clean Angora sweaters -- never throw them in the machine. When hand washing, use warm water and a gentle laundry detergent, look for a product recommended for delicates, baby clothes or wool. Gently roll the sweater in a towel to absorb some of the water, then lay flat to dry, shaping it so it retains its original shape. After it dries, re-freeze it or defuzz it before wearing.
4. Create a humid atmosphere by installing a humidifier in your home -- although this step is really only worth it if you are a frequent Angora wearer. Angora fur tends to become statically charged, making it strongly attractive to lint; humidity reduces that static charge. Avoid shuffling your feet on carpet while wearing Angora, and touch metal objects to dissipate static charge to reduce static charge and eliminate Angora lint.
