Moonstone Crystal Healing

Moonstone Crystal Healing

On a clear night, when the moon is full, it appears to shimmer. Make a wish. See a project to fruition. There is power in the moon. It regulates the ocean's tides, as well as a woman's monthly cycles. The moon is represented in a type of feldspar known as the moonstone. Used for centuries as a healing stone, the moonstone has a powerful effect on women as well as men--to balance and to heal.

Characteristics

Moonstone is a lustrous gemstone of the feldspar group, composed of potassium aluminum silicate. It has a 6.5 to 7 rating on the Mohs scale of hardness. Moonstone comes in white, cream, peach, pink, gray and blue (also called Rainbow Moonstone). It is translucent and has a shimmering, iridescent quality known as adularescence. Moonstone is found in Australia, Sri Lanka, India and the United States.

History

For centuries, many cultures revered the moonstone for its healing and metaphysical properties. The Romans attributed the stone to all moon goddesses, but especially Selene and Aphrodite. It was thought to have fallen from the sky during the full moon. The Lakota Indians attribute the moonstone to the mother, new beginnings and balancer of emotions. It is the totem stone for the time of the "Strong Winds Moon" or those born from February 11 to March 10. Moonstone is sacred in India, the Orient and throughout Europe as a stone of love and fertility.

Healing Properties

Moonstone is a balancing stone. It is useful for women, as it balances mood swings associated with PMS. It is also beneficial for menopausal women and those who have undergone surgery. It helps with fertility problems, water retention, pregnancy, insomnia, bad dreams and stress headaches. In chakra healing, the moonstone is placed over the third eye, throat and heart chakras to gain inner peace and tranquility. Moonstone also aids in digestive ailments, epilepsy, nose bleeds, anxiety and immune deficiencies.

Metaphysical Properties

Moonstone is also called the "traveler's stone" and, as such, is useful for those who travel or work on or near the water. It is said that the moonstones will shimmer more strongly during a full moon and will be at their most potent to work with, either healing or as a wishing stone. Then, as the moon wanes, so does the stone's intensity, becoming more gentle in its applications.

Other Benefits

Moonstones placed in a dish in one's home will help to ease daily tensions among family members. It is also said to regulate one's body clock, especially if you do shift work or extensive traveling. When given to children, this stone prevents nightmares and regulates healthy sleeping patterns. There is no better calming stone for hyperactive children. Moonstones, as with jade, malachite and moss agate, are good stones for the garden. Plant some in the ground or hang from a wind chime to promote healthy plants and trees.
