Recovery Time Of Scoliosis Surgery

An abnormal curving of the back is called scoliosis. Minor forms of scoliosis may only need to be watched to make sure that the degree of the curve does not worsen. Curves of 25 to 40 degrees usually require the person involved to wear a brace to get the spine to curve back the right way. If bracing does not solve the problem, spinal fusion surgery may be the next step. Scoliosis surgery recovery times can be tracked in several stages as the person regains strength to live his everyday life again.

Hospital Stay

After scoliosis surgery, expect to be hospitalized for at least four days, say experts at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center (see Resources). Depending on how recovery is going, you may need to remain in the hospital for up to a week.

Bed Rest

Spinal fusion patients need to rest at home for several weeks after their surgery. Bed rest is advised, with very minimal movement. Patients can gradually go back to school or work two to three weeks after the operation.

First Six Months

The first half-year after scoliosis surgery is still considered a time of healing. Lifting items that are heavier than a pound or two is prohibited. Patients can walk but should not jump or run during this time.

Adding Activities

Adding activities back into your life will depend on your progress and your doctor's consent. Some people are able to being swimming six months after surgery and can start stretching exercises and gentle biking around the eight-month mark.

Full Range of Motion

By a year after scoliosis surgery, most people are able to start running, jumping and otherwise enjoying a full, normal life again.
