Primatene mist is an inhaled treatment for asthma.
Primatene is one form of medication used to treat asthma. Asthma is a disorder of the lungs that causes inflammation of the respiratory tubes. This inflammation causes the tubes to narrow and can make breathing difficult. Oral medications, nebulizers and inhaled mists such as Primatene are used both as daily maintenance and on the spot treatments for an asthma attack.
Primatene
Primatene is an inhaled medication containing 0.22 g epinephrine that acts as a bronchodilator. Taken during an acute asthma attack causes respiratory structures in the lungs called bronchioles to dilate and allow more air to circulate in the lungs. Primatene also provides temporary relief for wheezing, tightness in the chest and shortness of breath.
Common Side Effects
Just like with any medication, side effects may occur. Primatene has several common side effects such as high blood pressure, dizzyness and trouble sleeping. Users of Primatene may also experience headache, nausea, vomiting and dry mouth. Increased heart rate, nervousness and throat dryness may also occur. Not all patients experience all side effects.
Severe Side Effects
Some people may experience one or more severe side effects such as an extreme allergic reaction involving hives, difficulty breathing or swelling of the mouth or tongue. Chest pain or an abnormal heart rhythm may also occur. Patients with previous cardiac conditions must also be aware of the possibility of fatal cardiac arrythmias. The risk of pulmonary edema is present as well.
