Staphylococcus, more commonly known as staph infection, varies widely in its ability to result in mild to life-threatening conditions. This bacteria can cause an ailment directly such as a skin malady to producing toxins that lead to such diseases and conditions as toxic shock syndrome and food poisoning. Many times it is difficult to find an antibiotic that the condition will respond to.
Skin Staph Infection
The site of staph infection on the skin will appear red and swollen. It will also be painful to the touch and result in a boil or abscess.
Drainage
The site of an abscess caused by staph infection may drain a pus-like liquid.
Flu-like Symptoms
Upon contracting a staph infection, you may feel as though you have the flu, including symptoms of an achy body, head ache, chills and fatigue.
Scalded Breast Syndrome
In breastfeeding mothers, staph infection can result in breast inflammation called scalded breast syndrome. This can be life threatening for the infant as staff bacteria can be released into the mother's milk.
Shortness of Breath
If the infections spreads through the blood stream, entering other body organs such as the lungs, shortness of breath may arise, sometimes even causing pneumonia to develop.
