Stop Hives & Itchy Skin On Dogs

Small changes to your dog's environment can put a stop to itchiness and hives.

Our canine friends can be affected by itchy skin and hives that result from allergies or parasites. Constant itchiness makes life uncomfortable for dogs, and excessive scratching can lead to skin infections and hair loss. As a caring owner, it is distressing to see your pet in this condition, but there are helpful changes you can make to your dog's environment and daily care to reduce allergens and stop the itching.

Instructions

1. Bathe your dog using a hypoallergenic dog shampoo and warm water to remove any allergens or debris from its fur and skin.

2. Give appropriate flea-control medication to your dog to kill fleas. Many dogs are allergic to fleas and fleabites, which cause itching and hives. Flea medication is available in pill and topical forms from your veterinarian.

3. Apply an anti-itch cream such as hydrocortisone or aloe to your dog's skin to soothe irritation or dry patches.

4. Take your dog to the veterinarian for prescription antihistamines or other allergy medication, if appropriate.

5. Wipe your dog's paws and fur with hypoallergenic wet wipes after going outside. Many dogs are allergic to grass or pollen found outside, which can cling to the skin or fur after a trip outside.

6. Supplement your dog's diet with fish oil, which provides essential fatty acids for your dog's skin cells. This helps keep skin healthy and less prone to dryness and itchiness.

7. Change your dog's food to a grain-free recipe. Many dogs are allergic to grains such as corn, wheat and soy, which are found in some dog foods. A grain-free food will provide proper nutrition without added allergens.

8. Treat your yard and home for insects such as ants, which can bite your dog and cause hives and itchy skin.

9. Wash your dog's bedding weekly to remove any dust or pollen on it. This will keep your dog from re-exposing itself to these allergens.
