Wash The Eye Out

Washing the eyes helps decrease irritation caused by allergies, air pollutants, chlorinated water, or dust. Washing the eyes is also important to remove trapped particles, such as dirt or hair, or to flush out chemicals or other harmful substances. The eyes are fragile, and incorrect washing techniques can do more harm than good. Knowing wash the eyes out can alleviate discomfort and help prevent permanent eye damage.

Instructions

1. Remove contact lenses and any visible particles or debris from the eyes before using an eyewash solution (often saline fluid), bowl of water, or eyewash station to wash the eye out.

2. Use an over-the-counter eyewash solution to clean your eye by tilting your head back and pulling down your lower lid using your index finger. Hold the bottle of eyewash solution close to the affected eye, and drop the solution into your eye following the dosing recommendation listed on the product label.

3. Wash your eye out with an eyecup and eyewash solution if you do not have a dropper available. Rinse and fill an eyecup halfway with eyewash solution. Any cup small enough to fit snugly over the eye will suffice. Place the cup over the affected eye and press against your skin to prevent leaks. Tilt your head back, open the affected eye, and move your eye around to allow the solution to reach all parts of your eye.

4. Fill a bowl halfway with lukewarm water to wash your eye when no other options are available. Lean over the bowl and slowly lower your face into the water. Open the affected eye and move it in a circular motion to allow the water to wash away any trapped particles.

5. Flush your eye at an eyewash station by holding your eyelid open with your thumb and index finger. Wash your eye from the outer edge to the inside and roll the affected eye to ensure the entire eye is washed. Continue flushing your eye for at least 15 minutes.

6. Call your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room if your eye is burned with chemicals, you have an open eye wound, you experience vision changes or blindness, or if your pain or other symptoms persist after washing out your eye.
