Herbal Cure For Rls

Restless leg syndrome, or RLS, affects as many as 12 million Americans. The National Institutes of Health defines RLS as "a neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move when at rest in an effort to relieve these feelings." While there are herbal treatments available, it is important to recognize that holistic methods seek to eliminate the cause of the disease, rather than just the symptoms. The herbs described here are effective at treating stress, which is an underlying cause of RLS.

Valerian Root

Valerian root is an herbal sedative. It is hypotensive and helps reduce hyperactivity. It is also effective for insomnia and sleep disorders. Valerian root is generally used to treat stress, anxiety and nervousness. Because of its tranquilizing effect, it should not be taken with alcohol. Aside from its sedative action, there are no other known side effects. Valerian root can be taken in capsule or tincture form. Use moderately, as it does have a strong flavor.

Kava Kava

Kava kava is a Polynesian herb primarily used to combat stress and treat insomnia. It is a relaxant that helps alleviate nervousness and anxiety. It is also a mild pain reliever. Although kava kava is an herbal remedy, it has powerful effects and should not be taken with alcohol or in conjunction with prescription antidepressants. Kava kava is often included in herbal teas, although it is also available in capsules or tincture form.

Panax Ginseng

Panax ginseng is considered a whole-body tonic. According to Clayton College of Natural Health, it "increases resistance to stress by affecting the adrenal-pituitary axis." Although it is considered a stimulant, panax ginseng is "an adaptogen or an aid in helping the body adapt to stress." It has also been used to treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Ginseng tablets and capsules can be found in most natural health food stores.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo is known as the memory herb. It increases blood flow to the brain and strengthens cell membranes. It is also an antioxidant, combating free radical damage in the body. Ginkgo is useful in treating RLS as it promotes nerve transmissions and tones the blood vessels throughout the body. It is considered a natural antidepressant and helps alleviate tension and anxiety. It is widely used in conventional medicine throughout Europe and has no known side effects. Ginkgo is most commonly taken in capsule form, although it is also available in a tincture.

Precautions

Before beginning these or any herbal treatments, check with a health-care practitioner. Do not discontinue or alter any prescription medicines without consulting the prescribing physician.

Although the pain and discomfort of RLS can be debilitating, the focus of any treatment plan should be to manage stress and eliminate anxiety, which can exacerbate the symptoms.
