Foods That Trigger Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects millions of people and often goes undiagnosed. Its symptoms can mimic many other diseases and conditions. Those who deal with it know it can be painful, embarrassing and, in some cases, debilitating. While there are some drugs out there to treat the condition, the easiest way to your keep your IBS in check is to avoid foods that can trigger an attack.

Meat and Animal Products

The two biggest triggers for IBS are fat and animal products, according to helpforibs.com, and meat is chock full of both. The worst kinds of meat to eat if you have IBS are red meat and dark poultry meat. Dairy products are also IBS triggers because of their fat content and also because they contain whey and casein protein, which can cause digestive problems. Helpforibs.com says even low-fat dairy, such as skim milk, can trigger IBS symptoms because of the whey and casein. Another animal product that can trigger IBS symptoms is egg yolks, although egg whites are OK.

Fried Foods

Like meat and dairy products, fried foods, such as French fries and pastries, contain loads of fat, which is not good for someone with IBS.

Other Foods

According to helpforibs.com, other foods that can trigger IBS attacks include, coconuts, nuts and olives.

Beverages

Drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and should be avoided. Alcohol has the same effect, and carbonated drinks, whether they contain caffeine or not, can cause bloating and cramps, which can worsen an IBS attack.

Food Additives

Artificial sweeteners and fats can trigger gas, bloating and diarrhea and should be avoided, as should MSG.
