Requirements For A Medicaid Application

The requirements for an application for Medicaid are set by state agencies and laws. The specific requirements for application for Medicaid vary by state because Medicaid is run by individual states which set their own income and application guidelines. However, most states follow similar general guidelines.

Identification

The general requirements for a Medicaid application start with submitting a completed application to a local Department of Family and Children Services office or its equivalent. This is done by mail, telephone, email or in person.

Function

The basic requirements to qualify for Medicaid are that you are age eligible, being either a young child or over 65, and are a U.S. citizen. You must also have a valid Social Security number, proof of residency and have applied for other benefits such as food assistance, housing and cash assistance.

Features

Depending on the type of Medicaid coverage, you also need to have proof of disability, meet income guidelines and assign medical benefits to the Division of Medical Assistance. You may also be required to be living with a specified relative if you meet low income or childcare guidelines.

Warning

Physical proof will be required for eligibility. This will usually be birth certificates, payroll stubs or government benefit deposits, bank records, rent receipts and proof of citizenship such as a photo ID card. You will also need to bring any insurance policies.

Considerations

Applications for Medicaid will take about 24 hours to be placed into the system after the agency receives it. The date you submit the application, if done by phone, email or in person will be the date of the application. If you apply by postal mail the application date will be the day the application is received.

Time Frame

The required time frame for determination is usually within ten days. The exceptions to this guideline are disabled applicants (60 days) and applicants who are not pregnant, newborn or over 65 (up to 45 days).
