Can Lyrica Be Used For Essential Tremors

Essential tremor is the most common type of tremor, and while onset is usually after age 60 it can begin at any age. It is based in a genetic neurological disorder. Pregabalin (Lyrica) has been used to treat peripheral neuropathy, epilepsy, and fibromyalgia and is being investigated for usefulness in treating essential tremor.

How does Lyrica work?

Lyrica is thought to work by calming over-excited or damaged nerves by reducing the signals sent to and received by these nerves.

Mixed reviews

While effective in some nerve-related conditions, studies are still ongoing regarding essential tremor therapy, and results have been mixed.

Positive statistics

A study of two patients conducted in 2006 showed significant improvement in upper body tremors with treatment of 200 mg per day of Lyrica.

Negative statistics

In June 2009, it was reported that another small study (this time 20 patients) showed no more improvement for essential tremor with Lyrica than with placebo. This study in fact showed decreased quality of life ratings due to dizziness and drowsiness.

Clinical trials

The University of South Florida in conjunction with Pfizer has embarked on a 6-month clinical trial. Clinicaltrials.gov lists any trials that are still recruiting for ongoing studies of Lyrica therapy for essential tremor.
