Use A Neti

This teapot can be effectively transformed into a Neti pot using only gravity and courage.

A Neti pot may look like a teapot, but instead of hot tea, it pours lukewarm water in your nose. It can come in many sizes and shapes, from squeeze bottles to syringes, but Neti pots are the same in their use. Some relieved symptoms are sinus pressure, coughing, facial pain, and headache, all by pouring water down your nose. It sounds terrible, but with a few easy steps, a bit of concentration, and the ability to breathe through your nose, a Neti pot can be a great tool in clearing out stray bits of mucus and freeing your sinuses.

Instructions

Preperation and Completion

1. Add 1 pint (16 oz.) of lukewarm water with 1 tsp. of salt to create a saline solution. Stir well to make sure the solution is homogeneous. Fill the pot with the solution.

2. Angle your head roughly 45 degrees for optimal results. Adjustments might need to be made on the fly. Lift the Neti pot and place the tip in the higher nostril, making sure the Neti's tip fits securely.

3. Pour the Neti pot into your nose slowly, keeping the mouth open, allowing gravity to pull the water in one nostril and out the other. Keep in mind that first tries often go awry, especially with users who don't fully understand how the nose interacts with water. Remain angled, and avoid turning too parallel to the floor (which can cause water to flow down your throat) or too perpendicular, which will halt the flow of water.

4. Avoid swallowing, tensing the throat, coughing, and breathing through the nose, as this can interrupt the process and cause discomfort. Simply remain calm and keep the water flowing.

5. Wipe your nose and dry gently once all the water is poured. Though the process is slightly uncomfortable for new users, using a Neti pot works to alleviate sinus problem by flushing out debris and mucus. The small hairs in your nose (cilia) get cleaned by the water and salt, which allows them to perform better by clearing breathed air.
