Instructions
1. Know your eye correction prescription. Because laser eye surgery options have become so sophisticated, some are better for those with higher prescriptions for near-sightedness or astigmatism.
2. Look at the PRK option. This stands for photorefractive keratectomy. It is one of the oldest procedures and not as common as it used to be, but can be the way to go for a thinner cornea or large pupil. Recovery time from PRK is gradual over several months.
3. Examine the Lasek option. This involves lifting the outer layer of the cornea with a fine blade and alcohol to loosen the tissue so the laser can be used underneath. Healing time in many patients is about 24 to 48 hours from the actual surgery.
4. Evaluate the Lasik procedure. There is a tiny incision in this option as well, lifting a flap from the cornea and using the laser underneath for the vision correction.
5. Compare Lasek and Lasik to PRK. Both Lasik and Lasek have much shorter recovery times and vision improvement is often within the first 2 or 3 days to the point you can drive without glasses.
6. Ask about Zyoptix. This is a relatively new technology for many eye types in which the laser works more quickly and allows the surgeon to be more accurate.
