Information On Rose Quartz

Rose quartz refers to a pink or reddish variety of quartz, which is the most abundant mineral on Earth. Rose quartz is composed of silica (SiO2) and forms hexagonal crystals.

Features

Rose quartz has a vitreous or glassy luster and a hardness of 7. Rose quartz ranges from translucent to opaque. The stone's pink or rose red color may be caused by traces of iron and titanium, although some studies have suggested microscopic fibers of an unknown mineral actually cause the color.

Uses

Rose quartz is sometimes used as an inexpensive gemstone and ornamental stone. Rose quartz is an alternate birthstone for January. The stone symbolizes love and beauty.

Location

Rose quartz is found in Brazil, India, Germany, Madagascar and the United States. It exists in many geological environments and has been found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.

Fun Fact

Rose quartz is closely related to other forms of quartz. For example, amethyst refers to purple quartz, citrine is yellow quartz and smoky quartz appears brown or gray.
