Lap Band Surgery Pain

Lap band surgery is a bariatic procedure for morbidly obese individuals. A band is applied around the stomach, sectioning off a small area for food, resulting in rapid weight loss. Because it is a surgical procedure, there is some pain involved in the process.

Considerations

According to Banner Bariatric Centers, most patients report a fair amount of pain after the surgery, generally around the site of the access port because of the surgical aspect of implanting it. The pain is generally akin to soreness felt after abdominal exercises. The port is a small nodule implanted in the abdominal wall. It is attached to a tube, leading to the band; the port is used to adjust the saline in the band.

Timeframe

Prescription medication to control lap band surgery pain is given for about week, after which pain can generally be controlled via over-the-counter pain medication, like ibuprofen or acetominophen.

Misconceptions

Despite common misconceptions, the band itself does not actually hurt or feel uncomfortable.

Warning

If pain persists for longer than a week, or is so severe that you cannot get up and walk around, contact your bariatric surgeon immediately.

Prevention/Solution

To ensure minimized pain, take it easy for up to six weeks after the surgery. Refrain from intense physical activity, and get plenty of rest and fluids.
