What Is A Holistic Dentist

A holistic dentist renders drug-free dental treatment utilizing natural, non-toxic materials. This approach to dentistry incorporates the health of the entire body in the course of treatment in the belief that all health problems are interrelated. Holistic dental practitioners will often work in conjunction with a patient's physician (see Resources).

Restorative Materials

The effect of toxic metals, such as mercury in amalgam restorations (silver fillings), is one area of concern addressed by the holistic dentist by replacing amalgam fillings with non-toxic composite fillings (tooth color fillings).

Anesthetics

Holistic dentists utilize hypnosis in place of chemical anesthetics (drugs) to treat patients who are fully awake and aware of the procedures being performed, but not cognizant of the sensation of pain or discomfort.

Stress

Holistic dentists incorporate the tranquilizing effects of homeopathic remedies as part of their treatment, including the use of foxglove and gelsemium, to relieve stress without the use of drugs found in prescription medications (tranquilizers).

Balance

Used by holistic dentists and other healthcare professionals, aromatherapy utilizes the inhalation of plant oils, such as sandalwood and basil, to create a natural hormonal balance that benefits overall health and has a soothing effect on patients.

Diet and Nutrition

Holistic dentists educate patients about the harmful effects on general health resulting from inadequate nutrition and an unhealthy diet, including the dietary link to dental caries (cavities) and the development of periodontal disease.
