Treat And Prevent Lock Jaw Or Tmj

Lock Jaw is typically the result of having a mis-aligned biting motion when chewing food or or is an early sign of an infection. When biting in an incorrect motion it is easy for the jaw joints and muscles to tense up or lock making it difficult to chew or preform day to day activity. Treatment is critical and you should consult a doctor immediately if you show symptoms.

Instructions

1. Sometimes lock jaw can be an early symptom of an infection called Tetanus. It can be prevented by taking a vaccination from your doctor and by keeping open wounds properly taken care of. Surgery may be required to clear up any infections you may have. This is a rare case though, particularly in the United States where boosters are given to reduce the likelihood.

2. Most often what people label as lock jaw is actually Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, TMJ. Essentially it is a catch all term for inflammation and other problems of the jaw joint. Like with any inflammation, start with ibuprofen of some kind.

3. A heating pad placed on the jaw joints can help relieve the tightness of the muscles and reduce pain. Swelling should also hopefully be reduced.

4. Sleeping on your back or front side will also help relieve pressure as gravity won't be playing against you.

5. If problems exist for long periods of time, consult your doctor and dentist.
