Uses Of White Boards In Hospitals

White boards are popular chalkboard-like devices used for communication in offices, hospitals, classrooms and other areas where information needs to be relayed. White boards use dry-erase markers and they are cleaner than chalkboards. There are many uses for a white board in hospitals from displaying staffing information to providing patients basic information like their doctor's name and room number.

Patient Information

One use of white boards in hospitals is to relay doctor information to patients --- doctors and nurses provide their names on individual boards posted in patients' rooms. This helps patients remember names. Other information posted on white boards in patients' rooms include room numbers, exams scheduled for the same or next day and basic advice (like when the nurse will return to the room) to help patients remember.

Nurse and Staff Scheduling

Another use of white boards in hospitals is to display nurse and staff scheduling. Nurse/staff member names, shift hours and floor or area can all be displayed quickly and changed easily if needed. By using a set of magnets, one can easily move the magnets to represent a nurse or staff member's status --- off duty, coming in at a set time or a change in area/station. Hospitals use various sizes of white boards that can accommodate any number of nurses and staff.

Meeting Points and Notes

Hospitals also use white boards to relay information during staff meetings. Meeting attendees can view the information quickly and the person conducting the meeting can make changes within seconds. By using two or more white boards, notes from staff members can be recorded on one board while the person conducting the meeting can write points on the other white board. Other notes posted on white boards may include upcoming meetings, the outcome of the current meeting and concerns.

Patients' Symptoms and Diagnosis

Doctors use white boards as a way to chart patients' symptoms in an attempt to diagnosis the disease or problem. By using a white board, doctors and their teams can quickly write out symptoms and see a connection. The white board can be erased quickly and the next patient's diagnosis can be charted.
