Alternative To Taking Birth Control For Cramps

Cramps can be quite a nuisance, and for many women their periods cause them a high level of pain and discomfort--so much so that it can disrupt their everyday lives. Doctors regularly prescribe birth control as a form of treatment, but there are many other ways to combat those pesky cramps without taking hormones.


The Birth-Control Pill


Many women use birth-control pills to treat their menstrual cramps. Oral contraceptives prevent ovulation, so the uterus does not contract in reaction to the usual chemicals released during the menstrual cycles. Birth control can also lighten your period, making it less painful and uncomfortable.


Some women do not want to take the pill, possibly for religious or personal reasons, or because they might not like the way their body reacts to it. Whatever the reason, there are other ways to treat menstrual cramps without taking hormones.








Alternatives to Birth Control


The use of heat can be beneficial for cramp relief. Try soaking in a nice warm to hot bath or using a heating pad on your abdomen or lower back. Be careful not to overdo it, and if you are not sure, you can talk to your doctor about it. Heat will relax muscles and help with a lot of the discomfort you may experience during your period.


Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can also be used to control the pain. Be sure to follow the directions carefully. Many women will begin using these drugs before the pain gets too bad, possibly even the day before, to get a jump start on treating their cramps. Again, talk to your doctor if you want to be sure you are using these medications properly.


Yoga, massage, and breathing or stretching exercises can also be used to relax your body and reduce pain and tension. Some women have also used acupuncture with success or have turned to meditation. Orgasm also has been beneficial in the relief of cramp pain for many women. Others swear by raspberry leaf tea. There are many options out there, so carefully experiment to see what helps you most.


If none of these things is helping your cramps or if you are concerned your periods are heavier or more painful than what is considered normal, talk to your doctor to see if you have a more serious condition, such as endometriosis, and to see what other alternatives may be available in treating your pain.
