Encourage A Cancer Patient

According to the American Cancer Society's Global Cancer Facts and Figures, more than 12 million people receive a diagnosis of cancer each year. Fear, anxiety and depression are common responses to the disease, which has the potential to attack any part of the body. Cancer not only places physical demands on the body but also affects the mind and emotions. Cancer patients tend to feel alone or isolated, making it important to receive encouragement, support and motivation---an important part of accepting diagnosis, completing treatment and leading a normal life.

Instructions

1. Offer a helping hand. Between cancer treatments and routine doctor visits, cancer is an exhausting experience. Show your support by offering help where needed, such as babysitting children, cleaning the house, providing transportation to doctor appointments or cooking meals.

2. Ease fears with physical touch. It is common to feel untouchable or even "contagious" when diagnosed with cancer. Hugs, kisses and other forms of physical contact can bring comfort.

3. Involve close friends and relatives. Surrounding a cancer patient with the warmth and support of friends and family members lets her know she is in the thoughts of loved ones. Bring cards or arrange phone calls with out-of-towners.

4. Post inspirational quotes. Cancer patients find hope and encouragement through daily affirmations of life and living. Create a bulletin board that displays a rotation of positive thoughts.

5. Decorate the room with fresh flowers. The sight and scent of fresh flowers uplifts the spirit. Choose brightly colored blooms, like roses, carnations, daffodils and tulips.

6. Share success stories. Give encouragement by drawing attention to the latest survivor stories of cancer patients and the terminally ill. Highlight tales that illustrate individuals beating the odds.

7. Smile. One of the biggest concerns for many cancer patients is how their loved ones and friends are handling their illness. A smile not only brightens the mood, but also fuels a positive attitude and recovery.
