Ayurveda For Kidney Cleansing

The kidneys are responsible for processing excess fluid, waste and minerals from the blood, according to the Mayo Clinic. The kidneys can build up an excess of these minerals, which leads to the formation of kidney stones. Your kidneys are also susceptible to toxic injury from a variety of substances that can cause damage and reduce the kidneys' ability to function, according to the Mayo Clinic. The ancient Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda has developed several herbal formulas designed to protect and cleanse the kidneys.

Cystone

The herbal formulation Cystone is made of nine different Ayurvedic herbs and is specifically formulated to dissolve kidney stones and protect the kidneys. A study published in the journal "Phytotherapy Research" in 1998 found that a liquid syrup preparation of Cystone was able to reduce the calcium and oxalate levels in the kidneys of patients who were given a formula designed to increase these levels. Calcium and oxalate are major components in the formation of kidney stones. Another study, published in "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" in August 1998, found that Cystone was able to significantly protect rats against kidney toxicity that was induced by the researchers through a chemical called cisplatin. Cystone comes in both tablet and syrup formulations and can be found in health food stores, online and in many Indian grocery stores. Make sure to check with your doctor about possible drug/herb interactions if you are on pharmaceutical medications before beginning any herbal protocol.

Mutrakrichantak Churna

Mutrakrichantak Churna is another traditional herbal combination that is used for general kidney health, such as liver cleansing and for dissolving kidney stones. Mutrakrichantak Churna can made of several different herbs but is always based on the herb Salacia oblonga, or Trin Panch Mool. In a study published in the journal "Evidence based Complimentary and Alternative Medicine" in August 2009, researchers found that Salacia oblonga was able to inhibit the enzymes responsible for forming kidney fibrosis. Kidney fibrosis is one of the final stages of kidney disease and is followed closely by kidney dysfunction and failure. Mutrakrichantak Churna is usually available as a powder that can be consumed on a daily basis for an Ayurvedic kidney cleanse, and is to be found at most Indian grocery stores as well as on the Internet.
