Air Purifier Tips

Air purifiers are manufactured by several different companies and are designed to help remove particles, pollution and dirt from the air and dispense cleaner air back into the environment. Air purifiers may be particularly helpful for those with allergies, respiratory illnesses or sensitivities, as well as people who live in a high-pollution area or simply want to breathe cleaner air. The units can be purchased online and in many hardware, home retail or garden stores, and are fairly simple to use. However, there are some tips that will assist you in keeping your purifier working well.

Basic Cleaning

While an air purifier can be very useful in cleaning the air and removing particles and dust, it will help to reduce the air purifier's workload and improve overall conditions if the area in which it is placed is cleaned on a regular basis as well. Vacuum the carpet with a HEPA-filter vacuum, sweep the floor regularly and dust hard surfaces to help remove dirt, dust and dander that may otherwise aggravate the situation.

Airflow

For the best performance, set the air purifier on the floor, and make sure the air vents and grilles are not blocked by furniture, toys, draperies or any other items that may reduce the overall effectiveness of the air purifier. Keep doors and windows closed for the best result, as open windows will quickly push out the clean air and bring in more polluted air.

Filter

One of the primary components of an air purifier is the air filter. Most air purifiers have a disposable filter that you replace with a new filter. Purchase replacement filters at a hardware store or through the manufacturer. If the air purifier has a filter indicator light, change the filter any time the light is illuminated. Otherwise, a good rule of thumb is to replace the filter approximately every three months.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance of the air purifier will help it continue to work well. Clean the exterior of the air purifier any time dust or dirt builds up on the unit. Do not run the unit while unattended, and service or troubleshoot the air purifier any time there are problems or concerns.
