Treat High Levels Of Cortisol That Cause Obesity

Cortisol is a hormone that is released from the adrenal cortex in the body. It is often called the "stress hormone" as it gets released in high amounts in times of stress. When cortisol is released in proper amounts it helps with substrate utilization. This means that it helps the body utilize fat, protein and carbs for energy. But during prolonged periods of stress, high amounts of cortisol can build up in the blood which can lead to obesity, especially in the abdomen. This is why it is important to follow some steps to treat high levels of cortisol that can cause obesity. This can help you to reduce stress and as an added benefit, lose some weight.

Instructions

1. Keep the diet clean. Avoid foods that are deep fried, processed, refined and high in saturated fat. Also avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and soda as they are empty calories. Instead, eat foods that are nutrient dense like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, low fat dairy, beans, seeds and nuts.

2. Do some weight training. Weight training is a good way to reduce and manage stress. It will also add some muscle mass which can help increase metabolism and help burn more calories. Do exercises that target the whole body. Some examples are chest presses, shoulder presses, back rows, tricep extensions, bicep curls and squats.

3. Go for a jog. Aerobic activity can also lead to stress reduction and aid in weight loss. Perform activities like jogging, biking, stair stepping, rowing or swimming. Fast paced walking is also an effective exercise for reducing stress and promoting weight loss.

4. Attend relaxation classes. Some of these classes involve a lot of breath control and concentration which can lead to a reduction in stress. A few examples of these classes include yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi.

5. Get enough rest. Cortisol levels are higher first thing in the morning. According to Dr. Angela Clow, a psychologist from Westminster University, waking up 20 to 30 minutes later in the morning can help keep cortisol under control.
