Color Essential Oils

When coloring essential oils, it is best to mix the oils with a carrier oil first. A carrier oil is any light oil that will dilute and become a base for, or "carry," the essential oils. By mixing a carrier oil, you only have to use a portion of the essential oil and can preserve the rest for future use. Also, mixing color directly into the essential oil may contaminate the oil and alter the smell. During the soap and candle-making process, dyes are added to the soap, or wax, after adding the essential oils. The same principle applies when coloring essential oils for cosmetics, lotions and massage oils.

Instructions

1. Sterilize the bottle, lid and measuring cup by immersing them in boiling water for 10 minutes. Set all items face down on a clean towel to cool and dry.

2. Pour 1 oz. of grape seed oil into the glass measuring cup. Add 1/2 oz (or 3 tsp.) of your essential oil to the grape seed oil.

3. If you are blending essential oils, mix them together in a separate container until you reach the desired scent. Add 1/2 oz. of the essential oil blend to the grape seed oil.

4. Stir the grape seed oil mixture with the craft stick to evenly disperse the essential oil.

5. Mix a few drops of the desired dyes into your oil. Stir the mixture and continue adding drops until you reach the desired color and hue.

6. Put the funnel in the mouth of the glass bottle, and slowly pour the oil mixture into the bottle. Use the spatula to scrape the sides of the measuring cup.

7. Cap your bottle and store your oil in a cool, dark place between uses.
