Many people use their eyes over long periods of time which in turn causes eye strain. There are some simple things individuals can do to eliminate this strain, especially if whatever they are working on requires extended periods of focus, such as reading often does.
Instructions
1. Provide adequate and soothing lighting when having to focus on any project for extended periods of time. Make sure the lighting in the room you are in does not cause squinting. Make sure the light is coming from behind and over your shoulder. If overhead lighting is all that is available, try not to be positioned directly underneath it. Further, fluorescent lighting appears to be easiest on one's eyes.
2. Make sure what you are concentrating on is large enough to see. If you are reading print of any kind, make sure it is at least a 12 font. If it is not, you may want to consider using a magnifying glass or reading glasses. if you are lying in bed or sitting in a chair, try a pillow for support against your neck. This will help to prevent stress of your muscles in your neck as you read, and may help improve your concentration levels as well.
3. Take frequent breaks when concentrating for large periods of time. Be sure to blink
4. Place a cold wash cloth over
5. Take a nap if you are tired as a result of reading. Retention of the material will be decreased as a result of a tired mind. Refreshed eyes are able to concentrate better after sleeping.
