Deal With Nervousness

Shuffling your feet and dwelling on nervousness is not your only choice. Deal with nervousness in a healthy manner

Nervousness can suddenly overcome people in various circumstances such as social situations, financial problems, work situations and worrying about future scenarios. Often, this nervousness will last longer than the situation itself. Many times, people dwell on the situation and are still nervous about it well after it has taken place. Often, people are nervous about a situation long before an event has happened. There are ways for them deal with nervousness and even eliminate it when it arises.

Instructions

1. Ride your bike when you're feeling nervous.

Go for a bike ride or practice some other form of physical exercise whenever you start to feel nervous about things. If you can't go exercise in the moment of nervousness, try to do some form of physical movement. Just moving around can calm your nerves.

2. Cut caffeine out of your diet.

Eliminate caffeine from your diet. Caffeine can cause jittery and nervous feelings all by itself.

3. Allow yourself to feel nervous.

Let yourself feel nervous when you can't do anything to fix it. Nervousness usually only lasts about 45 minutes maximum. If you try to stop the nervousness or fight it, it might last longer due to the fact that it isn't being dealt with.

4. Remind yourself that you've gotten through similar problems or situations in the past. Try to think of a time when you experienced similar nervousness and how you dealt with it or how it went away.

5. Avoid worrying about future problems. Ask yourself two questions: "Is this something that will likely happen soon?" and "Can I do something about this now?" If either or both of the answers are "no," then tell yourself you'll think about it later.

6. Eat healthy food and make sure you get enough grains, fruits, vegetables and protein every day. Eating healthy will increase your brain's serotonin levels, which helps you be happy and calm.

7. Distract yourself by having fun. Watch a funny movie, go to a museum, read a good book, go to the beach, play a game with friends or do anything that you enjoy doing.

8. Meditate and/or do yoga on a daily basis. Meditation and yoga can increase your well-being physically, mentally and spiritually, and can also help you calm your nerves.

9. Keep a journal about the times you were nervous, and look at it later when you're feeling calm. Write a list of things you did to handle it well, how you could have handled it better and how it wasn't actually as big of a deal as you thought.
