Actifed, generically found as triprolidine and pseudoephedrine, is a combination drug used to treat the common symptoms of allergies and colds, including sneezing, cough and runny nose. As a prescription drug, Actifed has been known to cause a number of side effects that depend largely on the particular individual taking the drug and the dosage.








Identification


Actifed is a prescription drug classified as an antihistamine and decongestant. As a combination drug, Actifed is able to relieve multiple symptoms arising from hay fever, allergies or the common cold. As an antihistamine, Actifed blocks the body's release of the chemical histamine which causes sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose. As a decongestant, it prevents nasal blockage.


Serious Side Effects


According to Drugs.com, users of Actifed have experienced the following side effects: vision changes, chest pain, irregular heartbeat and urination, seizures, hallucinations, severe dizziness and drowsiness, weakness, anxiety, tremors, fever and decreased coordination. Severe allergic reaction, including swelling of the face or throat, may also occur as a result of using this product. In the case of any of the above side effects, contact your doctor immediately.


Common Side Effects


Actifed may cause a number of common side effects including mild dizziness and drowsiness, constipation, dry mouth, diarrhea, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, excitability, vomiting, nervousness and insomnia. Persistent side effects from the preceding list may be a sign of a serious problem and require immediate medical attention.


Usage


Always use Actifed according to directions. Never alter the dosage or duration of the medication. Actifed can be taken with or without food, but to prevent case of stomach irritation, food is recommended. Be sure to take Actifed with at least eight ounces of water. Actifed is a short-term treatment and symptoms should clear within seven days. If symptoms persist, contact your doctor.
