Adolescent Drug Treatment Programs

Family conflict, insufficient supervision, preexisting emotional or psychological problems, peer pressure, and abuse can all lead to an adolescent abusing drugs or alcohol, though some teens wind up with a drug problem even when no obvious risk factors are present. Inpatient, outpatient and boot camp treatment programs are all options that may help these adolescents maintain sobriety and reach their potential as functional adults. Most treatment plans focus on the patient's physical needs in addition to such issues as conflict, stress, communication, self-esteem, boundaries, and past traumas. A combination of one-on-one and group therapy sessions help teens understand the issues behind their drug use.

Duration

An adolescent enrolled in an in-patient drug treatment program will live at a facility for an average of thirty days. For more severe drug or behavioral problems, a longer stay may be necessary.

Outpatient Drug Treatment

These programs are a good option for those teens who may need intensive treatment, but do not require around-the-clock supervision. At the beginning of the treatment, some adolescents might attend 4 to 5 individual or family therapy sessions per week; as treatment progresses, these sessions may taper off.

Adult vs. Adolescent Treatment

The same treatment plans that have proved successful with adults may not be effective with adolescents, since adolescents have different developmental needs, cognitive functions and values. Adolescents may also face unique challenges within their peer groups and school systems.

Boot Camp

Boot camp is a different approach to drug treatment for adolescents. While not recommended for those with serious drug problems or those whose addictions are taking a physical toll, teens who are at risk to develop addictions may benefit from the military-style discipline, physical exercise and emphasis on respect and responsibility the boot camp method utilizes.

Other Camps

Other "camp-like" experiences that may help troubled teens include wilderness-based treatment programs. These programs remove the teen from negative environments and focus on wilderness education, physical challenges and team-building to address such issues as developing positive relationships with peers, dealing positively with conflict and responsibility.

After a Treatment Program

After completing a treatment program, attending Alcoholics and/or Narcotics Anonymous meetings often facilitates continued recovery. Treatment for other psychological disorders, such as depression or anxiety, may also help the adolescent cope with stress once formal drug treatment has ended.

Cost

The cost of such treatment is usually covered through a combination of insurance and personal funds. Payment plans are often available.
