The process of repairing nerve damage is not an easy one. Nerve pain is often debilitating and frustrating, it can lower the quality of your life and finding relief becomes a challenge. Please note that herbs are powerful medicine and should only be used after consulting a holistic doctor for diagnoses.

Herb Combinations and Tonics

When you combine several herbs in one capsule or tonic you are able to cover a broader spectrum of neurological symptoms without having to purchase multiple bottles. Good herbal combination's for nerve pain and regeneration are Nerve Formula by Dr. Richard Schulze. and Dr. Christopher's Nerve Extract. Both use the same herbs for the most part, black cohosh root, blue cohosh root, blue vervain, lobelia, valerian root and skullcap herbs, wood betony.

No matter what your nerve problems, minor to extreme, these basic herbs are used by herbalists. Traditional Chinese medicine has herbal combinations that are normally prescribe in conjunction with acupuncture or through an oriental medicine practitioner. Herbs in liquid form absorb better into the body and provide full benefit, while the least preferred method is a compressed tablet with wax coating.

Nerve Regeneration

Nervine herbs assist the body by calming, nourishing, and soothing your nervous system so it can heal and regenerate.

Wood betony is good for calming the nerves, a raw inflamed nerve is not healing properly and the pain creates tension in the surrounding muscles.

Black cohosh (Cimicifuga Racemosa) is used mainly as an aid in the metabolism of the sedative components of valerian's stimulative properties while it waits to be broken down by the body. The two work better together than individually.

Blue vervain (Verbena Hastata) is used to strengthen and regenerate the nervous system while relieving tension and stress.

Lobelia (Lobelia Inflata) is used to relax smooth muscles and has been used to decrease muscle tension and convulsions. It is very calming to inflamed and agitated nerves when an injury is involved.

Valerian root is an herb that helps sooth rattled or irritated nerves. The drug Valium is derived from valerian root. If a nerve is irritated from trauma or injury valerian will sooth it and take the edge off your pain.

Scullcap (Scutellaria Lateriflora) supports, strengthens and gives immediate relief from chronic and acute diseases that affect the nerves.

Damiana (Turnera Aphrodisiaca) treats nervous and muscular debility, especially when caused by overexertion or trauma.

Gotu Kola helps sedate the central nervous system.

Topicals

Capsaicin is derived from cayenne and has been used as the base in creams for external use on skin to treat diseases like diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage), psoriasis, facial neuralgia (Bell's palsy) and surgical pain. Be sure to wash your hands after applying lotions or liniments.
