South Beach Diet For Vegetarians

The South Beach Diet is great for vegetarians. Plenty of substitutes for protein are available. Some such substitutes include legumes, soy and beans. With the South Beach Diet, vegetables and fruits can be eaten in Phase 2 and 3. It is suggested that vegetarians take a calcium supplement when starting the South Beach Diet. It is also suggested that by the time you reach Phase 3, you should take a multi-vitamin and omega-3 supplement.


Phase 1








You eat substitutes for protein in Phase 1. A vegetarian should try to eat items from 10 different categories in Phase 1. Each of these categories have meat substitutions, so a vegetarian can follow the South Beach Diet plan strictly. The 10 categories include: fats, nuts, tofu, eggs or an egg substitute, cheese, legumes, seeds, low-fat versions of meat, milk and vegetables.


Phase 2








During Phase 2, vegetarians can gradually start adding in carbohydrates to their diet. Increase your intake from one serving to three servings per day. Snacks are optional during this phase. There are four types of food to add into your food intake during Phase 2. These foods include dairy, vegetables, starches and fruits.


Phase 3


Phase 3 is designed for when you reach maintenance. Maintenance is where you have achieved your desired weight goal. Phase 3 lets you eat a variety of foods; the food you eat is up to you. By the time you reach Phase 3, you should know choose the food you eat. This means that you can eat what you want under the restrictions of the South Beach Diet that you have learned during Phase 1 and 2.
